• The New School's Summer Program
• Typically Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

The Month of June is a continuation of the rest of the academic year with the same teachers, Parent Helpers and curriculum. We offer a full day (8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.) of academic and social skills activities.
The day begins with individualized instruction in reading and math building on the student's particular skill levels and following our usual curriculum objectives.
Mid-day is a time for lunch, physical activities, and a weekly social skills group led by a licensed counselor.
The afternoon is devoted to project-based learning integrating all major subjects (math, science, social studies and language arts) around a school-wide theme selected by the teachers each year. In the past, themes have included "Leonardo da Vinci," and "Hollywood in the Heights." Teachers and students use this time to extend the sorts of projects designed for the annual Fall Festival. Teachers consider both the children's academic levels and their social-emotional development in assigning various projects. For example, in previous summers, older students made replicas of Leonardo da Vinci's inventions, while younger students painted self-portraits "in the style of" the Mona Lisa.
The day ends with a Social Skills building activity designed to promote age-appropriate interactions with peers in a relaxed atmosphere. As during the rest of the year, students earn these activities such as "Fun House Friday" by completing academic tasks.
The major difference between The Month of June and the rest of the academic year is that the school is open to students who do not attend during the rest of the academic year. This gives parents who are contemplating a shift to The New School in the Heights a chance to test whether the school is a good fit for their child. It is also a chance for struggling students to "buff up" their schoolgirl or schoolboy skills with highly skilled teachers in a nurturing environment. Similarly, students who need help with their social skills or to counteract bullying, may develop strengths in those areas. Finally, the student who needs extra academic support in order to succeed in their home school during the following year may also be helped.
The theme for 2012 is still in progress. Stay tuned!
